MP calls for new Kendal car park to be free

Following the news this week that the New Road car park is to close, local MP Tim Farron has called for its replacement at Beezon Fields to be free-of-charge for drivers.

South Lakeland District Council agreed on Wednesday to draw up plans to replace the spaces lost at New Road with safe parking spaces elsewhere in the town, most likely at land the council owns at Beezon Fields.

Speaking today, Tim said: "I fully understand the safety concerns at New Road, and I'm pleased that the council will be announcing a number of interim arrangements to help drivers next week once New Road closes.

"However, there can be no doubt that the closure of the car park at New Road will hit those on the lowest incomes the hardest, and I am therefore calling on the council today to make the replacement car park at Beezon Fields free to use."
