MP backs blind access campaign
More must be done to improve accessibility for blind residents, according to South Lakes MP Tim Farron, who is backing a national campaign by Guide Dogs UK.
Tim met with Guide Dogs UK yesterday to back their 'Access All Areas' campaign. Individuals with guide dogs or assistance dogs have the legal right to enter the majority of premises and vehicles with their dog.
However, national research by Guide Dogs UK suggests almost half of guide dog owners have been refused entry to somewhere in the last year. The most frequent places that guide dog owners are refused access is taxis, restaurants and shops.
Tim has also written to Sight Advice South Lakes to consult with them on practical steps that need to be looked at in the area.
Tim said: "The accessibility needs of blind people are too often overlooked. As a community we must look at ways we can be inclusive, and that means ensuring that blind people are not unfairly refused access. I am pleased to give my backing to this important campaign from Guide Dogs UK, and look forward to working with groups and individuals in our area to make real improvements."
