MP asks for bespoke support package to protect outdoor education centres

11 Jan 2021

During a parliamentary debate this week, South Lakes MP Tim Farron made the case for the Government to introduce a specialist funding package for struggling outdoor education centres.

Tim called on ministers to follow the lead of the devolved government in Scotland who have provided a package of support to the outdoor education industry worth £2m.

Of the 15,000 teachers and instructors employed in the sector, around 6,000 have lost their jobs and several centres have permanently closed.

Speaking after the debate, Tim said: "Outdoor education centres are really beneficial for young people's mental health, their confidence and can reignite their love of learning.

"When lockdown ends, these centres will be needed more than ever.

"The Government must introduce a special package of support to save outdoor education centres."
