MP and local councillors call for answers over controlled explosion in Grange
Local MP Tim Farron and local Lib Dem councillors are demanding answers after residents were left in shock following an unannounced controlled explosion at the new housing development on Allithwaite Road in Grange-over-Sands.
On Friday afternoon, local residents reported that the explosion resulted in debris and rocks flying into people’s gardens, and that at least one person was nearly hit.
There was also reports of the ground shaking which was particularly distressful for elderly residents, children and pets.
Tim has written to Westmorland and Furness Council’s planning department asking them to ensure the developer does not carry out explosions without proper notice or safety barriers in place to minimise damage.
Tim said: “My office has been inundated with phone calls and emails from worried residents about the controlled explosion on Allithwaite Road.
“The explosion has understandably caused huge anxiety.
“Thankfully it sounds like no one was hurt or no property was damaged, but next time we might not be so lucky.
“I have been in touch with the developer and they have assured us that they have reported this to the Health and Safety Executive and a full investigation is now ongoing.
“It’s absolutely critical that this never happens again.”
