Minister says immigration plans are under review after pressure from MP and hospitality leaders

On the floor of the House of Commons this morning, local MP Tim Farron urged the Government to rethink plans which would make it much harder for businesses in the Lake District to recruit staff.

Back in July, Tim led a group of hospitality leaders, including representatives from Lake District Country House, Windermere Lake Cruises and Mountain Goat Tours, to meet with the immigration minister to make the case for the current proposed threshold of £30,000 to be lowered.

Speaking during Culture, Media and Sport Questions, Tim said: "Is the Secretary of State aware that the Government's plan to put a £30,000 salary floor on migrants entering the UK will massively damage the tourism industry in the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales leaving many unable to fill vital positions?

"Myself and representatives from the tourism industry have spoken to ministers past and present on this matter about the need to massively lower that figure - will she listen?"

In response the Culture Minister Nicky Morgan said she was "very aware of the issue" and the decision on the salary floor is "under active consideration".
