Massive campaign to bring Cancer Unit to South Lakes gets under way
Local MP Tim Farron has this week written to 25,000 people across the South Lakes asking them to sign a petition backing his bid to bring a new cancer service unit to Westmorland General Hospital
Petitions will be dropping through letter boxes and appearing in public buildings this week.
NHS Cumbria has announced that they are working with other PCTs in the region to assess the feasibility of a new cancer centre in South Cumbria. Tim has been in discussions with a number of health professionals, ministers, cancer experts and the Director of the National Cancer Strategy as he takes forward plans to build a new cancer treatment unit at Kendal's Westmorland General Hospital.
Speaking today, Tim said:
"I've been overwhelmed by the phenomenal support and enthusiasm the community has shown for a new cancer treatment unit at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.
"What's become obvious from my time spent gathering signatures for this petition is just how many people have been personally affected by cancer, either directly themselves or through their families. This just goes to show what a massive difference having this treatment centre would make for the local community.
"I would urge everyone to sign the petition as the support from across the community can make a big difference to people suffering with cancer, and hopefully bring a lease of new life to the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal."
