Local unemployment amongst lowest in country

18 Jan 2017

Tim Farron's Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency had the sixth lowest unemployment of all 650 UK constituencies in December, according to figures released today.

Data released today by the House of Commons Library shows that in December 2016 there were 215 unemployed claimants in Westmorland and Lonsdale, representing 0.5% of the economically active population. This is significantly lower than the equivalent national rate on 2.4%.

Tim said: "This is good news for our area, showing the strength of the local economy. South Lakeland District Council has worked hard to support new businesses and entrepreneurs, and these figures show that this is paying dividends. Local businesses are creating jobs and boosting our economy. My thanks go to local businesspeople for their hard work, as well as to the council."
