Lib Dem Leader visits South Lakes Hospital to back Tim Farron's campaign for a Cancer Unit

30 Mar 2009

Local MP Tim Farron was joined by Liberal Democrat party leader Nick Clegg on Friday 27 March to visit Westmorland General Hospital and formally back his campaign to bring a cancer unit to the South Lakes. Tim is stepping up the campaign to bring chemotherapy and radiotherapy services to the Westmorland General Hospital after his proposals were met positively by local health bosses. Nick Clegg and Tim met Tony Halsall at the Hospital to discuss the issue.

The bid to bring a cancer unit to the South Lakes is supported by the Hospitals Trust, NHS Cumbria, and local cancer charities. In addition, over 6000 local residents have signed Mr Farron's petition in support of the bid.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"I've been overwhelmed by the phenomenal enthusiasm for this campaign shown by our local community. What's become obvious from my time spent gathering signatures for this petition is just how many people have been personally affected by cancer, either directly themselves or through their families. I would urge everyone who hasn't already signed the petition to do so. The support from across the community will make a big difference to people suffering from cancer, and bring a new lease of life to the Westmorland General Hospital."

"Hundreds of people in our area have to travel to Preston or Carlisle to receive vital treatment. Cancer treatment can be incredibly tiring and can leave patients feeling extremely unwell. Having to make regular round trips of more than 100 miles to get treatment is not acceptable.

We need our own cancer unit here in Westmorland and I'm delighted that Nick is joining our campaign. His support could be vital to take this forward. I really believe that we are making real progress now. I won't rest, however, until the unit is built and up and running"
