Lib Dem councillors call for action on parking in Windermere
Liberal Democrat district councillors Dyan Jones and Andrew Jarvis are calling for rapid action on parking issues in Windermere & Bowness.
Windermere Town Council have today released an in-depth report on parking in Windermere which highlights many of the problems that the Lib Dem team hear on the doorstep.
Dyan Jones said: "Parking is one of the biggest issues that residents raise with us, particularly the need for affordable off-street parking for people working in the town.
"We regularly hear from residents and local businesses who are frustrated about the lack of short-term parking for those wanting to shop in Windermere and Bowness."
The report from the Town Council contains many recommendations, some of which will require significant time and money to implement.
However, the Lib Dem team believe that a number of the proposals could be implemented quickly and call for:
- A new 'early bird' tariff at Broad Street car park to give £1 all day charge for those parking before 9.00am. This would give an affordable parking option for people working in Windermere and reduce the pressure on parking in the streets in the area.
- The introduction of 'disc parking' for on-street parking in the centre of Windermere and Bowness, as currently works in Ambleside. Along with better enforcement this can reduce the number of people parking for excessive times in these areas and free up short-term spaces for those shopping.
- Improved offers at the underused Braithwaite Fold and Rayrigg Meadow car parks
Andrew Jarvis said: "There is no quick fix for solving all parking issues in Windermere, but these three actions could make a real difference to both residents and visitors.
"We can't go on talking about this, we need to get these changes made."
