South Lakes MP Tim Farron has congratulated South Lakeland District Council as it votes to create 27 more affordable homes for local families.

Last Wednesday, the Lib Dem run council voted to give funds to South Lakes Housing to create 27 new affordable homes to rent. This project includes converting Ulverston Town Hall into 9 flats. The council will give an average grant per home of £49,000 and South Lakes Housing will cover the rest of the cost.

The district council is on track to meet its target of 1000 new affordable rented homes and 1000 new jobs by 2025. Since January 2014, 243 affordable rented homes have been created thanks to the council.

Tim said: "For a local family struggling to make ends meet, this decision will be a lifeline, giving them a decent home without sending them into the red.

"The South Lakes is a beautiful area, but finding affordable housing can be a real problem for many local people. Thanks to the Lib Dem run district council, 27 more families will now be able to rent affordable homes.

"The district council is doing a fantastic job for our area, and is well on its way to creating 1000 affordable homes and 1000 new jobs."
