Lake District Project Shortlisted For Award
South Lakeland MP Tim Farron is urging local people to vote for a project to 'Fix the Fells', which could be in line for up to £28,000 of funding if it wins a public vote.
The 'Fix the Fells' project would restore the footpath from Goat's Water to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston. This is one of the most popular routes in the Lake District but is currently badly eroded.
The project was put forward by Nurture Lakeland and outdoor shop George Fisher for a prestigious international award from the European Outdoor Conservation Association. The project was shortlised and is now through to a public vote and if successful, could receive a prize of £28,000 to complete the much needed repair work.
The grant would be used to employ 4 highly skilled lengthsmen to repair the path using traditional techniques, and it would then be maintained by 20 dedicated Fix the Fells volunteers.
Tim said: "This is a beautiful path with stunning views, but unfortunately it is a victim of its own popularity, as the impact of millions of footsteps have led to erosion on the path which is affecting the landscape and water courses.
"This project has been shortlisted for an award which would enable the path to be restored so that future generations can continue to enjoy the spectacular Lake District landscape.
