South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news this morning that Network Rail's preferred route for 'High Speed 2' shadows the West Coast Main Line, and has called for thought to be given to the best use of the existing line once the new one is built.

Speaking this morning Tim said: "High Speed 2 could bring real benefits for Cumbria, both for local residents and the tourism industry. We need, though, to ensure that Cumbrians can access the new service easily; and ensure that local residents are properly consulted on the route and planning implications of the new line.

"I also hope that Network Rail and the Government are forward thinking enough to look at innovative uses of the existing line as long distance journeys transfer to the new line. Local residents would receive a huge benefit from more local services if stations like Milnthorpe and Carnforth are reopened and new stations built. These local services could then link up with the high speed line at a regional station."
