Government U-turn will be a lifeline for many workers in the South Lakes - MP

16 Apr 2020

Commenting on the news that the Government have extended the eligibility date for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme from 28th February to 19th March, South Lakes MP Tim Farron said: "This is really welcome news and will be a lifeline for thousands of workers across the country who were set to miss out on the Government's relief scheme.

"I'd had dozens of constituents get in contact with me about this in utter desperation telling me about how this unfair cut-off point would have resulted in them facing a bleak financial future.

"So, I'm glad that the Chancellor has now finally listened.

"We will continue to challenge him to keep on listening to the many people who are still falling through the cracks - especially those who are self-employed.

"I will also push the Government to get on with giving the cash out so businesses can make their April payroll."
