Government postpones Cumbria’s County and District elections
On 22nd Feb Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government made a statement to the House of Commons. In this he stated that he has opened a consultation about establishing a Unitary Authority or Authorities in Cumbria to replace the County Council and the District Councils.
He explains that this is in response to locally-led proposals about how local government can be re-jigged to become Unitary. But, these proposals were put forward because he had specifically asked the various councils to send him their ideas on this topic and if they did not he would devise his own ideas. So disguised as locally driven but in reality the wishes of Westminster.
However the next stage is another consultation to which all can contribute. This consultation closes on 19th April 2021 so please have your say.

This is the only opportunity to express your wishes this year as the County Council elections and any general District elections have been postponed until May 2022, by which time the election might be for an entirely new local authority or council.
Any by-elections required for County or District will still take place on 6th May 2021 as will the Police and Crime Commissioner election. Town and Parish councils will be unaffected.
