Funding secured for local Lymphology Centre after MP intervenes

27 Mar 2018

Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed today's news that Kendal Lymphology Centre has secured funding to treat people with the debilitating illness lymphoedema for the next year.

The centre feared that they would have to close after being given no assurances over their future from local health bosses.

Currently over 240,000 people in the UK are living with lymphoedema, which, if not properly treated, can lead to traumatic complications such as limb amputations.

Following a letter from Tim to stress the importance of the centre, Morecambe Bay CCG have announced that funding will be put in place for the centre to continue for at least the next financial year.

To highlight the need for the centre to be sustainable in the long-term, Tim has tabled a motion in Parliament calling on the Government to fund lymphology clinics directly under the NHS, and to open more centres like the one at Kendal in additional locations to help more sufferers around the country.

Tim said: "The staff at Kendal Lymphology Centre provide excellent support for patients who are diagnosed with lymphoedema.

"So I'm really grateful that Morecambe Bay CCG have announced today that they will carry on funding this vital local centre.

"However, for lymphology centres to be sustainable in the future, the Government needs to change the system so that clinics like the one in Kendal are funded directly under the NHS."
