South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed new that the famous Lakeland Kerdwick meat has been granted EU protected status, putting it alongside Champagne, Scotch Whisky and Parma Ham.

Being elevated to protected status means that only meat from the Herdwick breed that is born, raised and slaughtered in the county of Cumbria can me described as Lakeland Herwick.

Commenting Tim said: "This is fantastic news and just goes to show the incredibly high quality of the produce that can be found in our local area.

"Being granted Protected Geographical Indicator status proves once and for all that Lakeland Herdwick is an internationally renowned product and now customers will know that they are buying the highest quality Cumbrian fare whenever they see the Herdwick label."
