Farron welcomes lottery grants

Local MP Tim Farron has today welcomed two lottery grants made by the Heritage Lottery Fund to projects in Kendal; namely £50,000 to Kendal Brewery Arts Centre for The Motto Project: 'Cloth is my bread,' and £130,000 to South Lakeland District Council for the Greenside Limekiln project. Mr Farron had previously raised concerns over the diversion of much needed cultural grants to help fund the Olympics, and is glad that the Heritage Lottery Fund have chosen to support culture in Kendal in this way.

Commenting, Mr Farron said:

"I am obviously very happy that the Heritage Lottery Fund has chosen to help culture in Kendal - I think that it is very important for us to celebrate our shared history, and these two projects will hopefully go a long way towards achieving this. The wool and cloth trade, for instance, was the bedrock of the British economy for many years. Kendal's growth and prosperity was based in no small part on the the wool and cloth trade.

"Thanks to this grant, schools and community groups will hopefully learn from 'Cloth is my bread' exactly what the town motto means. Likewise, the restoration of the Greenside Limekiln will remind us what went in to the production of quicklime for both buildings and agriculture.

"Fantastic local projects such as these would struggle to succeed without help from cultural grants, and whilst the Olympics are of significant benefit, our cultural heritage is just as important. Cumbria and its heritage should not lose out and I hope that the Heritage Lottery Fund will continue to support our area in this manner."
