Farron warns of a future with too few carers to deal with ageing population

25 Jun 2008

This Friday local MP Tim Farron will be speaking to the Care Sector Alliance for Cumbria conference. At the conference, Mr Farron will discuss the impact that skilled and motivated managers can have on the Cumbrian economy and the knock on effect that has on local people, as well as the importance of high quality social care services. Mr Farron has recently voiced his concern for the future of caring in Cumbria, noting the knock-on effect of an ageing population.

Mr Farron said:

"It is a concern for many reasons that 1 in 3 young people are leaving rural areas such as the Lakes for big cities, due to the lack of affordable housing and jobs amongst other things. One of these concerns is the availability of carers. If we have no young people, who will do the caring?

"Carers do a fantastic, under appreciated job and deserve our respect. Without carers, the elderly and disabled would have their quality of life seriously impaired, and we must do all we can to encourage people to take up caring as a career."
