Farron: Use Queen's speech to cancel the cuts
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has said the Conservative government must use tomorrow's Queen's speech to cancel the cuts to education, health and social care.
Tim's call comes amidst reports that the government is set to abandon its plans, set out in the Conservative manifesto, to axe universal free school meals for four- to seven-year-olds.
Tim said: "It is right that the government has scrapped damaging plans to get rid of free school meals. But the government must go much further - it must use the Queen's Speech to cancel the cuts which are planned for our schools, our hospitals and our care system.
"In Cumbria, our schools will see their budgets cut by £28million, while our health services face a mind-boggling £572million of cuts. Cuts on this scale will leave our children in overcrowded classes in underfunded schools, and leave the ill and vulnerable without the vital services they rely on.
"It is clear that there is no support for the Conservatives' cuts. Theresa May must now rethink her plans and cancel these cuts."
