Farron: Two New Apprenticeships Needed Each Day
Local MP Tim Farron has urged businesses in South Lakeland to take on apprentices, as the latest figures show that two new apprenticeships are needed each day for there to be as many this year as last.
The latest figures show that between August 1st and January 31st, 440 apprenticeships were started within Tim's Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency.
However, this leaves a shortfall of 360 apprenticeships which must be started before July 31st, in order for there to be the same number this year as last. This is the equivalent of two new apprenticeships each day.
In the full year 2014-15 there were 800 apprenticeships started in the same area.
Tim said: "Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for young people and businesses alike. Apprenticeships provide young people with training whilst gaining experience in the world of work, and also benefit businesses, which gain access to skilled local labour.
"I'm urging local businesses to take on new apprentices, so that young people have the same opportunities this year as last.
"Thanks to the Lib Dems in government, we saw a huge expansion of apprenticeships under the coalition - almost 4000 apprenticeships were created in our area in that time. The challenge now is to make sure that continues."
