Farron to keep promise to South Lakes' students over tuition fees
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has today stated he will keep his promise to young people and families in the South Lakes and vote against any plans for higher education that involving raising the cap on tuition fees.
Commenting on the findings of the Browne review of Higher Education Tim said: "At the election I made a set of promises to the people of Westmorland and one of those was on higher education. I am determined to keep that promise and not sentence to debt a generation of young people and their families. I will not vote to leave 18 year olds going to university next year from the South Lakes incurring up to £30,000 of debt. I am Westmorland's man in Westminster, not the other way round, and to me our communities come first.
"The Browne review is just that, a review. I want to see its findings going out to wide consultation with students, universities, unions and others. If the government comes back with any proposal that lifts the cap on tuition fees I for one will not vote for it. I believe that an abstention is not enough.
"I am fully in support of the coalition and am enthusiastic about working together in the national interest - but on tuition fees I will be keeping a promise to the people who elected me."
