Refugee Fundraiser

South Lakes MP Tim Farron took part in a charity cycle fundraiser for Syrian refugees on Friday, organised by pupils at Queen Katherine School.

Tim cycled around 5km, as part of the event organised by the student-run Amnesty International Group at Queen Katherine School. The Cycle For Syria fundraising event involved cycling 121 miles collectively on two static bikes over the period of 2 days (25th - 26th February) as this is the distance travelled by refugees from Hungary to Austria.

Tim has long campaigned for the government to do more to address the refugee crisis, and has visited camps in Lesvos and Calais. In particular, he has repeatedly called on the government to take in 3000 unaccompanied child refugees, in accordance with proposals by Save the Children.

Tim said: "The last couple of years have seen unprecedented levels of refugees entering Europe as they flee the terror and persecution of ISIS - we need to do far more to address this crisis, yet the government is unwilling to commit to real action. I will continue to call on the government to accept 3000 unaccompanied child refugees.

"This event is a real credit to the thoughtfulness and compassion of the students who organised it. They will not only have helped to raise funds for a worthy cause, they will also have helped to highlight this crisis and raise awareness about it amongst other students."
