Farron supports christmas child cheer
South Lakes MP Tim Farron is encouraging MPs to support the Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal, which sends thousands of Christmas presents each year to vulnerable young people living in extreme poverty. Tim has submitted a Parliamentary Motion to back this year's shoebox appeal and hopes that MPs from right across the country will back it.
Businesses, individuals, youth groups and schools take part in the annual appeal run by Samaritan's Purse by filling shoeboxes with everything from tennis balls to tooth paste. The Westmorland Gazette is urging readers to join in with the appeal by donating their own shoeboxes filled with gifts, which will be distributed to over 100 countries to children in disadvantaged communities.
These shoeboxes are often the only gifts the children receive at Christmas. For those living in orphanages, hospitals and children's homes, receiving a whole box full of presents transforms their celebrations. In the current economic climate, the scheme is likely to be even more important this year.
Commenting, Tim said, "I am very enthusiastic about this appeal. The chance to give to those who have nothing at Christmas, and to have fun while doing it, is a fantastic opportunity. I fully support Operation Christmas Child and hope that the numbers of shoeboxes sent will reach record numbers this year, on their 21st anniversary".
