South Lakes MP Tim Farron is supporting the British Pub Week which runs from October 30th to the 6th November.

British Pub Week is being supported by the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of all that the British Pub has to offer to its community. Throughout the week a series of special events will be happening to draw customers old and new to their local pubs.

The South Lakes is home to many fine pubs - including Tim's local, the Cross Keys in Milnthorpe.

Tim commented, "Well run community pubs play a huge role in social interaction, boosting local economies and promoting responsible drinking. Pubs are a key aspect of our culture, history and modern society. They are however increasingly under threat with 39 pubs closing every week. I support this initiative to keep pubs at the vibrant heart of our communities.

"There has also got to be a change to the rules around tied pubs. I have tenants who have been to see me to discuss the difficulties they are in because of their relationship with their pub company. Most of the pubs that have closed recently are owned by pub companies - those companies have little or no interest in the pub trade and are merely property holding firms who want to maximize their profit. Often they maximize their profit at the expense of their tenants who end up losing everything because of the unfair nature of the pub tie - its time that the tie was outlawed."
