Farron Speaks Up For Europe Alongside Former Lib Dem Leaders

South Lakes MP and Lib Dem leader Tim Farron today joined with past leaders of the Liberal Democrats to make the case for the UK to 'Remain' in Europe. Tim put forward 'Project Hope' - a pitch to young people to get involved in a vote which will have a huge impact on their futures.

At a Q&A this morning chaired by Lib Dem President Sal Brinton, Paddy Ashdown, Ming Campbell, Nick Clegg and current leader Tim Farron explained why staying in was vital to them. The audience also watched an old video of the party's other former leader Charles Kennedy, who died last year, making the argument for Europe.

Tim made a pitch to young people to vote: "This is too important to remain a blue on blue slug-fest between two chaps who went to Eton 30 years ago. If we vote 'Out', there won't be one referendum but three or four as we face the break-up of the UK.

"As a parent, for my children, and as a patriot, for my country, I vote to remain."

"Project hope is not just Europe staying together, but the UK staying together."

He advised younger people to stand up and have their voices heard in the referendum debate, pointing out that it is they who will be most affected by the outcome.

"What faces us at the moment is huge: are we going to be outward looking, or isolated?"

"I'm voting for my children and my family's future. You should do the same and vote to remain."

Commenting on the event, Tim said: "The referendum is absolutely vital to our country's future, but those who will be most affected are the young. I want the next generation to grow up in an outward-looking country that enjoys the benefits of being part of the world's largest single market, and which can tackle global problems working alongside our neighbours and allies. I want my children and their children to enjoy the opportunities that being in Europe brings. This is 'Project Hope' - this is why I will vote to remain in Europe."
