Farron sounds out electrifying new plans
South Lakes MP, Tim Farron, last week met with National Grid representatives to discuss plans for the North West Coast connections project, which will champion Cumbria as a key national centre for low carbon and renewable energy generation.
New energy providers in Cumbria and Lancashire have taken on the challenge of generating lower carbon energy in the face of rising demand, creating a fresh call for connections infrastructure in the area. National Grid is exploring options with the local community to link new generators to the grid in a countryside-friendly manner.
Meeting with representatives from National Grid, Tim Farron heard how National Grid will work closely with local communities and stakeholders to minimise the visual impact of developments. The plans could also see the old style of pylon replaced by a new pylon design. The full set of plans will be made available for public comment early next year, ready for a public consultation around spring 2012.
Commenting after the meeting, Tim said "I am glad I got the chance to express my concerns to National Grid about the need to respect our landscape and environment as the new connections are installed. It is vital that we protect the beauty of the South Lakes countryside by developing in a sensitive and intelligent way. It is very positive that National Grid has welcomed input from those living in the South Lakes area - it is important that they listen carefully to all concerns raised."
