Farron slams Tory-led County Council for again suggesting on street parking charges
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has today slammed county council proposals for charging for on-street parking.
The Conservative-led County Council last week proposed massive budget cuts which will slash services used by people up and down the South Lakes
In their consultation document for the 2011/12 budget the County Council are hoping to charge for on street short stay and disc parking, which is currently free in many areas. The campaign against this proposal is being led by Tim Farron MP and the Liberal Democrats. Last year Tim was successful in stopping these plans being implemented.
The proposal would have adversely affected communities like Grange, Ambleside and Windermere where businesses rely on on-street parking to attract trade. Tim has led a campaign against the charges, working with local businesses and chambers of commerce to fight against the proposal.
Tim said, "Our tourism industry needs all the help and support it can get and this proposal could be a huge blow. Charging people to park on the street is scandalous - I ask the Tory-led County Council to think again. I worked behind the scenes with tourism groups and local businesses to make sure that this didn't get through last year and we will do the same again."
