Farron slams Post Office Limited for undermining small branches

21 May 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has today spoken out against revelations that Post Office Limited appear to be deliberately undermining struggling sub-post offices. Recently, Post Office Limited sent information to large business customers in Kendal advising them that they would have to buy their stamps at the Crown Post Office at the other end of town, rather than Kirkland Post Office, which is a mere stones throw away. Furthermore, many customers have been sent Giro cheques made out to Crown Post Office, rather than Kirkland, causing serious concerns about the level of support that Post Office Limited are providing for struggling branches such as Kirlkland.

Commenting, Mr Farron said:

"This latest revelation is outrageous. Our small Post Offices, including Kirkland, need all the support they can get, and yet Post Office Limited is directing large amounts of local custom to another Post Office! Post Office Limited must explain themselves - I hope very much that this is administrative incompetence, rather than a not-too subtle plot to damage the business at Kirkland, so forcing them to close via devious means and without due compensation to the hardworking postmaster.

"If this is indeed administrative incompetence, then Post Office Limited needs to get its act together, and actually back up its words in support of local Post Offices. If they are trying to damage the business, then this must stop immediately and there should be a full inquest into how such a disgraceful course of action was chosen. Either way, we must make sure that this does not happen again, and that it is not repeated elsewhere. If any other Post Office has a similar experience can they please telephone my office straight away on 01539 723403. If we work together, we can stand up to Post Office Limited and make sure that all our Post Offices are treated fairly."
