Following the opening of the A591 this morning, local MP Tim Farron has called for efforts to be focused on repairing and reopening the other bridges which remain closed across South Lakeland.

The A591 was finally reopening this morning, 157 days after it was closed due to flood damage. However, there are still a significant number of bridges which remain closed across South Lakeland, including Sprint Bridge in Burneside and Gowan Old Bridge in Staveley.

Tim said: "It is extremely welcome news that the A591 has reopened, and the Lake District is back open for business. This will provide a much-needed boost to the local tourist economy.

"However, it is clear when we look across South Lakeland that the repair work is not complete, nor is the disruption over for local people. The County Council must now focus its attention on ensuring that the other bridges in South Lakeland are fixed and reopened as soon as possible. These other bridges may not be as central to the tourist industry as the A591, but they are critical for local people and local businesses."
