Farron raises concerns about sewage contamination in River Kent

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has raised concerns about ongoing sewage contamination of the River Kent, calling on the Environment Agency to issue an urgent safety update, as well as for United Utilities to be held responsible for fixing the damage already caused.

Concerned local anglers have contacted Tim to report that the Wastewater Treatment Works at Wattsfield in Kendal is continuing to pump contaminated waste into the River Kent.

This problem has been ongoing since the Wastewater Treatment Works were damaged during Storm Desmond last year.

Tim said: "I am extremely concerned to hear about the continued contamination of the River Kent. Reports this week suggest that sewage is still being pumped into the river, which is destroying its fragile ecology and killing local wildlife. This is not only a disaster for the river's biodiversity, but also for all those who depend on it, such as local anglers.

"I am calling on the Environment Agency to issue an urgent update about the state of the river, and how safe it is for people to be in contact with the water.

"United Utilities must also take immediate steps to fix the problems at the sewage plant, and should be held responsible for fixing the damage that has already been caused."
