Farron: 'On 1 April thousands of people will see a tax cut'

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has reminded people that on 1 April, over 200,000 people in Cumbria will be receiving a tax cut thanks to the Liberal Democrats.

The rise, a flagship policy for the Liberal Democrats at the last general election, was announced in the budget last year. It means that almost 3 million lower-income hard-working people will be taken out of tax altogether.

Around 22,010 people in Cumbria including 3,860 people in South Lakeland will be lifted out of paying tax altogether in April while a further 200,200 people in Cumbria including 41,800 people in South Lakeland will receive an increased cut in their income tax bill.

Tim is now pressing the Government to increase the tax cut again - to £800 from 1 April 2015.

This adds to the work locally to help people will their bills - including an energy cooperative, cutting energy bills by up to £200. The district council has also frozen council tax for the last four years, and Tim is pushing for United Utilities to freeze their water bills.

Tim said: "On 1 April, thousands of people should see the amount in their pay packet rise. This is good news for thousands of people locally.

"I want to see a fairer tax system where help is provided for those who need it most and where the richest pay their fair share.

"Raising the Income Tax threshold to £10,000 will help ordinary working people in Cumbria who have been struggling with bills and higher cost of living."
