Farron: Lib Dem health plans would mean green light for Kendal radiotherapy

Lib Dem health plans would enable the green light to be given to plans for a radiotherapy unit at Westmorland General Hospital, according to Tim Farron.

Tim took part in the Kendal Colour Dash on Sunday, alongside 1400 others, to raise funds for St John's Hospice.

Tim has long campaigned to bring radiotherapy services to Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. In January 2015 during the Coalition Government, the Treasury promised to provide the £15million needed to bring the unit to Kendal. However, since then the plans have foundered as the Conservative Government has refused to push the project forward.

Tim said: "I lost my Mum to ovarian cancer. As we went through that experience with Mum I saw first-hand the importance of hospice care - so please do donate if you can.

"There were many people running on Sunday who are living with cancer, and I was very moved as people came up to me to say thank you for our work in bringing chemotherapy to Westmorland General Hospital. It's a reminder of why I became an MP in the first place, to make a difference for our community - to fight for our area and for everyone in it.

"Lib Dem plans to put a penny on income tax would mean that the green light could finally be given to plans for a radiotherapy unit here in Kendal. This would mean treatment closer to home for local residents suffering from cancer.

"The Kendal Colour Dash was a great event and I'd like to thank everyone who took part and was involved in organising it."
