Farron launches 'start-up allowance' for budding entrepreneurs
Tim Farron will announce plans today to would give a "start-up allowance' to help budding entrepreneurs with living costs in the first six months of setting up their business.
Tim wants to create a system that supports small businesses and start-ups, of the sort that are flourishing across South Lakeland. Last year there were 543 new businesses in South Lakeland - the highest of any area in Cumbria. Lib Dem plans would see entrepreneurs receive £2600 over the first six months (£100 a week) of setting up their new business, while it becomes established.
Other key policies include reviewing controversial business rates and expanding the state-owned British Business Bank to make it easier for firms to borrow.
Tim said: "Here in South Lakeland we are the entrepreneurial engine of our county. The council works hard to support small businesses and start-ups, and we reap the rewards when it comes to a thriving economy and jobs for local people. I want to expand and support that same entrepreneurial spirit across the country.
"The early months can often be really tough for new start-ups. Our plans will help get small businesses off the ground and let the economy grow.
"While the Conservatives give tax cuts to giant corporations, the Liberal Democrats are on the side of small businesses and entrepreneurs. I see examples of success all around us here in South Lakeland, and want to support and nurture that both here and across the country."
