Farron hails South Lakeland's green revolution

5 Jan 2017

Local MP Tim Farron has hailed South Lakeland's greenest year ever, as recycling rates continue to rise. He praised the District Council for their work rolling out kerbside recycling across the area.

Eighty five per cent of the district is now covered by kerbside recycling for plastic and cardboard, with Grange, Allithwaite and Kents Bank due to be added early this year.

This expansion has led to a significant increase in the amount of waste recycled. Across South Lakeland, 47% of the total waste is now recycled, compared to 43% a year ago.

Since last April, 370 tonnes of plastic have been recycled in the area, which is the equivalent of 12 million plastic bottles. The amount of green waste that is being collected in the area is now almost 10% higher than a year ago.

Tim said: "It is fantastic to see that South Lakeland continues to get greener and greener. Despite the challenges of being in such a large, rural area the District Council has worked tirelessly to expand recycling across our area and it is paying dividends. More waste is being recycled in our area now than ever before.

"Choosing to put waste in the recycle bin might only seem like a small gesture, but it all adds up - since April we've recycled the equivalent of 12 million plastic bottles. My thanks go to the District Council for their work, as well as to local residents who help to protect the environment by choosing to recycle."
