Farron encourages residents in older properties to claim water rate cut

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has advertised a scheme for United Utilities customers who could have their bills cut if they are affected by surface water issues.

In a reply to Tim, Polly Rourke, External Affairs Manager of United Utilities said: "In the early 1990s, we offered our customers a fairer way of charging for our services by separating the cost of removing and treating their sewage (foul drainage) from the cost of removing and treating surface water. Because we do not hold information about people's properties, we had no way of knowing which properties have surface water which does not drain to the public sewer, so in 1997 we voluntarily introduced a scheme allowing domestic customers to tell us if this is the case and claim a reduction in their bill. In the case of properties built since April 1998, the builders normally now notify us of the surface water arrangements.

"One of the terms of the scheme is that, if approved, the bill will be reduced from the beginning of the financial year in which the claim is received."

If you qualify for a reduction in your charges, and you have a water meter, United Utilities will reduce your annual wastewater fixed charge from £75.00 to £36.00.

Tim said: "Many residents don't know about this scheme and if they are affected by surface water, that they could get a rebate. I hope that anyone affected will apply for this and help cut their bills."
