Farron delighted after completion of Stock beck flood scheme

18 Jul 2007

Local MP Tim Farron welcomed the recent completion of the Stock Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme. The scheme had been planned since 1999 when 51 homes were flooded but had been beset by funding problems. There had been serious doubts over the scheme until Tim called a round-the-table meeting at which DEFRA agreed to fund the full cost of the scheme. The flood alleviation scheme, which includes a special catchment reservoir, now protects the affected houses in Lowther Park, Silverdale Drive and Calder Drive from any flood events up to and including one in 100 year floods.

The Stock Beck Action Group are holding a public meeting to celebrate the completion of the scheme and thank people for their efforts on Thursday 19th July at Castle Park School from 7.30pm.

Tim Farron said:

"I am delighted that the scheme has now been completed and residents of Lowther Park, Silverdale Drive and Calder Drive can finally feel safe from flooding.

It took a long time to get this scheme off the ground but it was certainly worth all the effort. I would like to praise the members of the Stock Beck Action Group who worked tirelessly to keep this issue at the forefront of the council's mind. They certainly deserve the bottle of House of Commons champagne that I will send them."
