Farron Chairs Roundtable On Child Refugees

South Lakes MP Tim Farron today chaired an emergency cross-party summit to look at the question of how Britain can support child refugees.

Tim has repeatedly called on the government to take in 3000 unaccompanied child refugees who are currently in Europe, which the charity Save the Children has campaigned for. Most recently, Tim raised this issue with David Cameron at Prime Minister's Questions two weeks ago. However, although the government has pledged to give money to help refugees abroad, it has not committed to helping these unaccompanied children.

Tim has visited refugee camps in both Calais and the Greek island of Lesvos, to meet refugees and witness the scale of the problem.

Tim said: "The refugee crisis is the biggest international humanitarian challenge we face, as Europe sees the largest number of refugees since the second world war. Cameron must show compassion and humanity, and accept the 3000 unaccompanied child refugees which I and Save the Children have repeatedly called on him to take in. The journey over here is a perilous one, which these refugees only make because they are fleeing unimaginable terror, war and persecution. Cameron must act in accordance with British values and do the right thing, by offering support to these children who are in a desperate situation."
