South Lakes MP Tim Farron has written to Transport Minister Norman Baker asking him to step in and secure funds to build a new roundabout at Greenodd.

Recently news has come out that the Highways Agency has withdrawn its guarantee of funding for the much needed roundabout on the A590. Highways Agency figures reveal that one person has died and three more have been seriously injured at the Greenodd junction between 2003 and 2007. A further 34 people have suffered minor or moderate injuries as a result of collisions there.

Tim has now called the County Council and the government to come together and help plug the gap and make sure that this accident black spot is dealt with. The plan to build the roundabout remains an approved scheme after Tim led a successful campaign between 2005 and 2007 to ensure Highways Agency approval, but the timing of the construction of the roundabout would be affected if the funds were not made available.

Commenting today Tim said: "I have written to the government and asked them to sit down with me and the County Council and try and find a way to secure the funds. This is a major accident black spot and the Highways Agency have already spent significant sums of money on engineering and legal work to prepare for the building of the roundabout - to not proceed now would be both dangerous and a waste of money. I will keep pushing to make sure that the safety of local people is put first."
