FARRON CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO ACT OVER BLUETONGUE THREAT

15 Jul 2008

Local MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hill Farming, Tim Farron has expressed his concern that Cumbria and other counties in the north of England have yet to be placed in the blue tongue protection zone.

Mr Farron tabled an Early Day Motion urging the Government to swiftly administer the vaccination to prevent the disease from devastating the income of farmers.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"The Government's refusal to provide Cumbria with a clear answer for when they will be vaccinated is extremely worrying for local farmers.

"These vaccinations must be administered immediately, so that farmers are able to get their livestock to market.

"Without any action, farmers will be facing restrictions which would cause real hardship".
