Farron calls for Kendal firm to be able to light Big Ben

6 Jun 2010

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has called on House of Commons authorities to allow Kendal based NJO Technology to be given the contract to light the historic clock tower with LED lights.

In a recent House of Commons debate the issue was discussed and Sir Stuart Bell who answers questions on behalf of Commons authorities said the issue was under review.

All across the parliamentary estate, low energy lighting is replacing old-style bulbs as part of the continuing maintenance programme. Though mainly still used as indicator lights, LEDs are increasingly being used as light sources. LED lights consume less energy, are more durable and last longer than incandescent light sources.

NJO Technology is a local firm which was established 15 years ago and currently employs 11 people at its site on Fell View Trading Park, on the Shap Road in Kendal.

Commenting Tim said:

"Annie and Mike Rawlinson run a fantastic company in Kendal. They saw that this issue had been debated and asked what I could do to help them. I have called on the House of Commons authorities to offer them the chance to light Big Ben with LED lights and show the great work the company does on this iconic national monument."
