Farron calls for greater recognition for South Lakeland’s carers
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has teamed up with TV presenter Angela Rippon to support this year's Carers Week (13-19 June) and recognise the contribution made by those people in South Lakeland and throughout our area who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail, or disabled.
The theme for Carers Week 2011 is 'The True Face of Carers'. It calls for greater recognition for the diverse range of people who have caring responsibilities. The work they carry out is vital for their families and friends, and for their communities. Carers Week campaigns for greater recognition and support for carers to ensure that they all know that they are not alone, and that help and services are available.
Tim met up with Angela Rippon, whom has personal experience of being a carer, at the House of Commons last week to pay tribute to local carers, and to urge that they receive more support in their caring roles. Other celebrities supporting Carers Week include Dame Judi Dench, Sir David Jason OBE and Jack Charlton OBE.
Carers Week is organised by a partnership of 9 national charities: Age UK, Carers UK, Counsel & Care, Crossroads Care, Dementia UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society, Parkinson's UK, and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers. For more information about local events and activities taking place as part of Carers Week, visit www.carersweek.org.
Tim commented:
"I have tremendous respect and appreciation for our carers in South Lakeland so many of whom sacrifice not only their time, but also their money and health in order to care for a loved one. I am delighted to team up with Angela and others this week in paying deserved tribute to carers."
"I am participating in Carers Week not only to show my respect, but to let carers know that there are services out there to help them. Together, carers save this country an incredible £119 billion, but it is important that they know they do not have to struggle alone."
"Caring can be incredibly difficult and demanding. I hope Carers Week succeeds both in paying tribute to the thousands of carers in Cumbria and in informing our carers that there are services available to support them. Carers Week is a fantastic event, and I look forward to raising awareness for carers and encouraging all to participate in the week's activities."
