Farron: BID result will help us boost Kendal's businesses

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news of the Business Improvement District (BID) 'yes' vote as a welcome step to support local businesses.

The result was more than 2-1 according to the Electoral Reform Society who ran the referendum. This is one of the biggest positive victories for a 'yes' campaign in the United Kingdom. Tim, who voted yes, said that the vote will help revitalise the town. Tim also praised all involved in the campaign for their hard work and commitment.

Following the successful vote, an elected BID management board will now be set up, with all businesses contributing to the BID levy eligible to stand. This board will be responsible for managing the BID and aims to make the control and delivery of improving Kendal town centre the responsibility of the local business community. With a projected budget of around £800,000 over five years to invest in developing Kendal as a more attractive place for trade, it is hoped that the BID will have real potential to stimulate the town's economy.

Tim said: "This overwhelming vote in favour is fantastic news for Kendal - I genuinely believe that putting Kendal's business owners in control of local business initiatives will ultimately lead to a more competitive and commercially attractive town centre. "
