Farron backs 'Shun Burn' campaign

9 Jun 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has tabled a Commons motion in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust's 'Shun Burn' campaign as the warmer weather arrives along with the tourist season in the Lake District. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of over-exposure to sunlight without skin-protection. The number of cases of skin cancer among young people has doubled in the past 20 years and there are 75,000 new cases every year, over 2,000 of which are fatal.

Mr Farron has tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to waive VAT on suncream, change its' designation as a 'luxury item' and make it a healthcare item.

Tim Farron said:

"Suncream saves thousands of lives every year so for the Government to put 17.5% on every bottle is ridiculous. The increase in the number of cases of skin cancer in youngsters is extremely worrying and I wholeheartedly back this excellent campaign to raise awareness.

"Apart from causing untold grief, sunburn costs the NHS millions every year, so any campaign to increase its usage is extremely worthwhile."
