Farron: "Archbishop's message on Wonga shows why we need South Lakes credit union"
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on local councils to 'step forward and ensure South Lakeland gets its own credit union'.
Last week, The Most Reverend Justin Welby told Wonga the Church would try to force it out of business by helping credit unions compete against the firm.
The BBC said the Archbishop's plan was to go to some of the 500 independent loan companies and say to them, "We will help you by letting you have access to our buildings and expertise".
Tim would like local councils to help further by offering the funding to start the scheme up in our area as soon as possible and has asked churches to get involved as hosts and helpers.
Tim said: "I have been a supporter of the credit union since 2010 and the campaigners have worked hard to get this project to this stage. It is now time for everyone including council, the churches and other charitable bodies to come together to make sure it has the funds and active support it needs to get started..
"I also hope local churches will join the campaign and together we can make a real difference."
