Fairtrade fortnight praised in parliament
Cumbria's own 'Fairtrade Fortnight', which is due to run from the 25th of February to the 9th of March this year has been praised by Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, who has tabled a Commons Motion welcoming the project. Mr Farron, who is the Countryside spokesman for the Liberal Democrats has been campaigning for the Fairtrade brand, which has ensured a better deal for thousands of third world farmers, to be extended to British farmers as well.
Tim Farron said:
"The Fairtrade brand has done a magnificent amount of good in recent years, and I am delighted that Cumbria is leading the way. The number of Fairtrade towns in this area is really impressive it's fair to say that Cumbria is a real beacon of good practice.
"I do think it is important however, that British farmers get a good deal as well, which is why I want to see Fairtrade for our farming industry, as well as for farmers overseas."
