D-Day approaches for Post Offices campaign

13 Mar 2008

Local MP Tim Farron is preparing for the final week of the first stage of the campaign against the Government's plans to close thousands of rural post offices up and down the country, preparing petitions to be presented on the floor of the House of Commons next Monday evening.

Mr Farron presented thousands of signed petitions protesting against the closures directly to the Prime Minister at Number 10 last week, and will formally present an even larger number to the Speaker on Monday.

The Government has threatened to close up to 20 post offices locally. Once a shortlist of post offices earmarked for closure has been announced, Mr Farron will launch the second stage of the campaign to defend those branches.

Tim Farron said:

"I am immensely grateful to everyone who has taken the time to sign a petition or write a letter in this campaign. We have all worked extremely hard and next week we will find out which post offices will survive. We will also find out which branches are singled out for closure and at that point we must redouble our efforts to save those offices.

"Our post offices are absolutely vital to the communities they serve, and I am determined that we fight to the end to defend them all."
