CUMBRIAN MP CALLS FOR BETTER SUPPORT TO STOP REOFFENDING
In a debate on the rates of reoffending in the House of Commons, Tim advocated for improvements to prisoner education and training are made as a matter of necessity to lower the rates of reoffending.
Tim quoted figures from the Selection Committee which found that there was a 90% reduction in reoffending from prisoners who had sat AS-level exams in the last 10 years. He also called on the Minister of Justice, Damian Hinds, to address the fact that one in four prisoners are care leavers: "How will he target those who have been in care to ensure that they do not go into the prison system in the first place?".
In response, the Minister generally agreed with Tim's points. However, he did not commit to any discussions on ways to improve these matters.
Speaking afterwards, Tim said: "It is absolutely essential that we look at the reasons why people reoffend and what we can do to stop that cycle.
"The evidence clearly shows us the best way to do that and that is to educate prisoners properly and ensure they have the support they need when they leave.
"Sadly, this issue clearly isn't a priority for this Conservative Government and they would rather sweep it under the rug than do what needs to be done."
