Cumbria Police seize hundreds of weapons

2 Sep 2016

Almost 800 weapons have been confiscated by Cumbria Police over the last year, including almost 200 guns, according to figures obtained by South Lakes MP Tim Farron.

The figures reveal that in the 2015/16 financial year, Cumbria Police seized 177 guns. In the year to June 2016, the police also confiscated 333 knives, as well as 265 other weapons such as axes, crossbows, nun-chucks, swords, knuckle dusters, machetes and cleavers.

Tim said: "People need to feel safe in their communities - and that means keeping dangerous weapons off our streets.

"These figures show the scale of the task facing our police force. Earlier this year, at the same time that hundreds of lethal weapons were being found in the wrong hands across Cumbria, the Conservatives brought forward disastrous plans to slash our police numbers. We successfully fought those plans then and will do the same if they try again. Our police need to be given the resources they need so that people in Cumbria do not live in fear."
