Councils invest extra cash to clear drains and gullies

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has praised the work of the County and District Councils who are working hard to clear drains and gullies ahead of the winter to help prevent flooding.

The County Council has invested an extra £100,000 for gully clearing in areas affected by flooding, to help reduce flood risk. The problem is particularly urgent at this time of year due to the amount of leaves falling from the trees. The councils are working together to make it as effective as possible, with the district council leafleting areas to ensure they are clear of cars and sweeping leaves from the road surfaces, and the county council then clearing the drains.

The County Council clears each of Cumbria's 140,000 drains at least once per year, with those in problem hotspots being cleared more often. Parish Councils have been given maps of drains in their areas and asked to highlight areas that are prone to blocks.

Tim said: "The floods last winter were devastating for our area, so I am pleased that the County and District councils are working so closely together to help minimise the risk of flooding in the future.

"There is a huge operation going on - the County Council is clearing well over 500 drains per day. In addition to this the gullies and culverts are being cleared. My thanks go to the County and District councils for their efforts.
