Community tapestry to record Kendal floods
Local residents are invited to take part in an exciting project to record the events of last winter's floods in a tapestry. Local MP Tim Farron has praised the project and encouraged local residents to get involved at two upcoming workshops on the 1st and 19th April.
The community project is being led by Quaker Tapestry, and will include collaboration from schools, youth groups, churches, community organisations and other groups.
There are two upcoming workshops, which will be run by textile artist Donna Campbell. These will be informal, family-friendly events suitable for everyone regardless of artistic ability. All art materials and tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided. There will also be an opportunity for local people to record their spoken memories of the floods as part of the project.
- Saturday 1st April (2pm-4pm) at the Quaker Tapestry Museum
- Wednesday 19th April (10am-12pm) at the Corner Stone Community Centre, Sandylands Methodist Church
Local MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in parliament praising the project as a "unique way of remembering this terrible event".
Tim said: "The floods of winter 2015 were devastating for our area, leaving local residents out of their homes and destroying their possessions. But it was also a time when the community pulled together and showed the South Lakes spirit at its very finest. People who had lost almost everything rallied around to help those who had lost absolutely everything. The Kendal Flood Tapestry is a fantastic project which will record what happened to our area, showing the destruction the floods caused but also the inspirational solidarity that local people showed in the face of such a terrible event. I'd strongly encourage local residents to go along to these workshops and get involved."
